What is ScarWork Therapy?

ScarWork Therapy is a gentle, non-invasive manual therapy developed by American therapist Sharon Wheeler. It is specifically designed to improve the health, mobility, and appearance of scar tissue, as well as the surrounding fascia and soft tissues. ScarWork is suitable for both new and old scars, and can be used following surgeries, injuries, burns, or other trauma to the skin and underlying structures.

How ScarWork Therapy Helps:

Scar tissue can cause more than cosmetic concerns. It may lead to:

  • · Restricted movement
  • · Pain or sensitivity
  • · Numbness or tingling
  • · Tissue adhesions
  • · Postural imbalance
  • · Disruption in lymphatic or circulatory flow

ScarWork Therapy aims to address these issues by using light, intuitive touch techniques that help to:

  • · Soften and realign scar tissue
  • · Reduce adhesions and restrictions
  • · Improve mobility and comfort
  • · Restore fascial and muscular balance
  • · Encourage natural healing and regeneration

Unlike deep tissue techniques, ScarWork Therapy does not break down scar tissue aggressively. Instead, it promotes a natural reorganisation of tissue through gentle stimulation of the body’s own healing responses.

Who Can Benefit?

ScarWork Therapy is suitable for a wide range of clients, including those with:

  • · Post-surgical scars (e.g. C-sections, mastectomies, joint replacements, abdominal surgeries)
  • · Traumatic injury scars (e.g. cuts, burns, or accident-related injuries)
  • · Orthopaedic and sports injury scars
  • · Scars from cosmetic or reconstructive surgery
  • · Internal adhesions from surgery or trauma

ScarWork Therapy can be beneficial months or even years after the initial injury or surgery.

What to Expect in a Session:

A ScarWork Therapy session typically involves a detailed consultation to assess your scar, symptoms, and history. Treatment is hands-on and uses gentle, responsive movements to stimulate change.

Sessions are often relaxing and comfortable, with many clients reporting improvements in sensation, appearance, and movement after just a few treatments.
